One Digital Well: The Full-Scale Digitalization of Drilling and Wells

Written by Christoffer Sørensen | May 11, 2023 8:00:00 AM

Over the last nine years, IDEX has become the software platform that takes Intervention operations into the digital sphere. Now the platform has expanded from the Intervention domain into Drilling, Completions, and P&A.

“Although we are extremely proud of how IDEX is received by the industry, we are just getting started. Our vision goes way beyond what we've achieved so far - It can be summarized by three words: One Digital Well”.

- Pål Larsen, COO & Vice President Sales at Stimline

What Does One Digital Well Mean?

It means that everything related to a well, follows a common digital workflow - from planning to abandonment.

Every entry into the well can be based on digital intelligence, formed by high resolution data gathered during Drilling, Completion, Intervention and P&A.

Furthermore, applications that form part of the digital workflow are tightly integrated meaning that energy company workflows are seamlessly connected with rig-site execution, whether it is drilling, completion, wireline, coil tubing or other types of well construction and maintenance.

  • Standard APIs make digital well plans load seamlessly, integrating energy company objectives and risks, and creating actionable rig-site work-instructions regardless of contractor.

  • Standard rig-site interfaces enable rig-site automation equipment to instantly process and convert plans to machine-oriented instructions ready for automated operations. In addition, creating standard interfaces for rig-site execution means every operation in the world can be part of this digital feature - Part of One Digital Well.

Creating standard interfaces between energy company planning and rig-site execution has another significant benefit; feedback loops. With data traveling in both directions from the planning teams to the rig and back again, advanced data science techniques turn complex problems into actionable insights. Having feedback loops can improve decision making, fuel continuous improvement, and ensure that the well objectives are met as safely and efficiently as possible every time.

In One Digital Well everything is connected with data. As the well is being drilled, risk evaluations generate proposals for future Interventions and the P&A guidelines are automatically proposed.

As One Digital Well gets more data, the more powerful the insights become.

In simple terms, One Digital Well is where advanced planning, automated execution, and deep data analysis is tightly integrated throughout the lifetime of a well, from inception to permanent abandonment.

It is full scale digitalization for Drilling and Wells.
